Shanghai University of Electric Power, founded in 1951, is a full-time institution of higher learning, co-run by the central government and the Shanghai municipality, and managed mainly by the Shanghai municipality. Pingliang Campus, the main campus of the university, lies near Yangpu Bridge in the eastern urban district of Shanghai, overlooking Pudong from the other side of Huangpu River. 1. History
Shanghai University of Electric Power, founded in 1951 and it was named as Shanghai School of Electricity Industry. In 1959, the university was re-named as Shanghai Power School and Shanghai amateur Power Institute merged into Shanghai Power School in 1960. With the approval of the Ministry of education, Shanghai Power School was re-named as Shanghai University of Electric Power.
2. Discipline and programs
Shanghai University of Electric Power has established eleven second-level colleges, such as college of Mechanical Engineering, college of Environmental and Chemical Engineering and college of Economics and Management. 30 Undergraduate Programs & 23 Postgraduate Programs are offered for Shanghai University of Electric Power. Now, The university has now more than 11,800 full-time students. The total number of international students in Shanghai University of Electric Power has grown up to 320, including 70 degree students, 150 long-term and 100 short-term language students.

Shanghai University of Electric Power has a totally number of 771 teaching staff including 421 professors and associated professors. In addition, the university has invited scores of well-known scholars and experts with domestic and international fame as the honorary visitors or Adjunct professors. Shanghai University of Electric Power has more than 50 fundamental and professional labs and around 20 research institutes. Among them is a ministerial key laboratory of Corrosion and Protection of Thermal Power Equipment from the State Power Corporation of China. The library of the university possesses a collection of more than one million books.

Shanghai University of Electric Power has participated in or undertaken 48 items of high-level vertical projects in “863” major projects, the National Natural Science foundation, National Development and Reform Commission Research Fund, National Space fund, Shanghai major scientific and technological research projects, Shanghai key basic research projects and etc. And over 10 projects are granted Scientific and Technological Achievement Award in provincial and ministerial level. Every year, research input reaches nearly CNY60,000,000 at Shanghai University of Electric Power.

Shanghai University of Electric Power has established a close relationship with international exchange and cooperation with universities in UK, Australia, France, USA, Canada, Germany, Russia, Japan, Vietnam, India, Malaysia, South Africa and some other countries. It has launched the International Academic Forum for the Development of Electric Power Technology(ADEPT). Every year, the university invites both short and long term language and scientific foreign experts to teach or to do research work on the campus. Some foreign experts have been engaged as our honorary professors. Students from Zimbabwe, Vietnam, Mongolia, France, Australia, Russia and other countries are enrolled into the university to study for bachelor’s or master’s degree or to do field practice. The university has established joined educational programs with Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg in Germany, University of Strathclyde in U.K. and Edith Cowan University in Australia to cultivate students into specialists with both Chinese and international qualifications for the development of the power industry.
